Glass, Marble or Solid Wood: Choosing a Dining Table Top
Glass-top, marble-top or solid teak dining table? Compare looks, durability, maintenance and everyday practicality to choose the right top for your home.
The top is what you see, touch and clean every day — so it shapes how a dining table feels to live with. Solid teak, glass over a teak frame and marble each have real strengths. Here’s an honest comparison.
At a glance
| Solid teak | Glass over teak | Marble / stone | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Warm, natural, timeless | Light, airy; shows off the wood or detailing underneath | Luxurious, cool, statement |
| Feel | Warm to the touch | Cool, smooth | Cool, smooth, heavy |
| Stains | Protected by the finish; wipe spills promptly | Very resistant | Can stain from oil, turmeric, wine and lemon if unsealed |
| Scratches & heat | Use mats and trivets | Can scratch; avoid very hot pans | Resists heat; can etch with acids |
| Daily cleaning | Easy | Easy, but shows fingerprints | Easy if sealed |
| Best for | Families, everyday use, classic homes | Smaller rooms, modern homes | Statement dining, formal entertaining |
Solid teak tops
A solid teak top is the most forgiving choice for everyday family dining. It’s warm, quiet (no clatter of plates on glass), and ages beautifully — small marks become part of its character, and the surface can be refinished years later. Use mats for hot dishes and wipe spills promptly.
See it in the Arlo Dining Set or the honey-toned Wren.
Glass tops
Glass makes a table feel lighter — useful in compact Bengaluru apartments. It also lets you enjoy what’s underneath: a teak lattice, carved apron or decorative frame, as in the Trellis or Regent. Glass resists stains completely and wipes clean in seconds.
Things to know: fingerprints and water spots show, so a daily wipe keeps it looking its best. Use felt pads under decor, and avoid placing very hot pans directly on the glass. Ask for toughened glass with smooth, polished edges. The Lumen and the black-glass Gatsby show how differently glass can look.
Marble and stone tops
Nothing makes a statement quite like marble. White marble with a brass inlay, as on the Carrara, brightens a dining room instantly; a veined stone top like the Terra feels grounded and earthy.
Marble is naturally porous, so it should be sealed and resealed periodically. In Indian kitchens and dining rooms the usual culprits are turmeric, oil, lemon, tomato and wine — wipe them up quickly, use coasters and mats, and clean with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner rather than acidic or abrasive products. Marble tops are heavy, so check your floor and entry route for delivery.
How to decide
- Young children or everyday heavy use? Solid teak is the most relaxed choice.
- Small room, modern look? Glass keeps it light.
- Want a showpiece for entertaining? Marble — if you’re happy to look after it.
