How to Care for Teak Furniture in Bengaluru’s Climate

Simple care for teak furniture in Bengaluru: daily dusting, monsoon humidity, sunlight, AC, polishing and fabric care — so your sofa and dining set last for decades.

Sienna Sofa Set — lifestyle

Bengaluru is kind to wooden furniture — no extreme heat or cold — but it does have a long, humid monsoon, dry winter months, bright sunlight through big windows, and more and more air-conditioned rooms. Well-made, properly seasoned teak handles all of this well. A few simple habits keep it looking its best for decades.

Everyday care

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth (microfibre is ideal). Dust is mildly abrasive, so regular dusting protects the finish.
  • For sticky marks, use a cloth that is only slightly damp, then dry the surface straight away.
  • Avoid harsh household cleaners, ammonia, bleach and silicone-based sprays — they can cloud or strip the finish.
  • Use coasters, mats and trivets. Hot cups and wet glasses are the most common cause of white rings.

Monsoon: June to October

High humidity is the biggest seasonal change for wood in Bengaluru. Solid wood naturally takes up a little moisture and moves very slightly; teak moves less than most woods, which is one reason it’s prized.

  • Keep furniture a few centimetres away from walls that get damp, especially external walls and walls shared with bathrooms.
  • Don’t let rain from open windows fall on furniture; wipe any splashes promptly.
  • Ventilate rooms on dry days, and use a dehumidifier if a room stays damp.
  • Check the undersides and backs of pieces for any fungal spots; wipe them with a dry cloth and improve airflow.
  • Monsoon is also the season to keep an eye out for termites — look for small mud tracks on walls near furniture and act early.

Sunlight

Strong direct sun through a window will gradually change the colour of any wood and fade fabrics. Teak naturally mellows and deepens with light, which many people love, but uneven exposure can leave a lighter patch where a vase or book sat. Use sheer curtains in the brightest hours and rotate items on tables now and then.

Air-conditioning and dry months

Air-conditioning dries the air. Avoid placing furniture directly in the path of AC vents or right next to heaters. Consistent conditions are kinder to wood than sudden swings.

Polishing and refreshing the finish

How often a piece needs attention depends on use. Dining tops and sofa armrests see the most wear. When the surface starts to look dry or dull after cleaning, it’s time for a refresh. Use a product suited to your finish — what works on an oil finish is different from what works on a lacquered or PU finish — and if you’re unsure, ask the maker. A professional re-polish every few years brings heavily used pieces back to life; solid teak can be refinished many times.

Sofa cushions and fabric

  • Vacuum cushions regularly with an upholstery brush.
  • Rotate and flip seat cushions every couple of weeks so they wear evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately — don’t rub — and spot-clean with a mild solution, testing on a hidden area first.
  • Follow the care label for removable covers; many are best dry-cleaned to avoid shrinkage.

Marble and glass tops

Wipe glass daily with a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner. For marble, use a pH-neutral cleaner, wipe up acidic and oily spills (lemon, tomato, turmeric, oil) quickly, and have the surface resealed periodically. We cover both in more detail in Glass, Marble or Solid Wood.

A simple yearly checklist

  • Check joints and tighten any fittings that have loosened.
  • Inspect for termites, especially before and after the monsoon.
  • Refresh the finish on high-use surfaces.
  • Deep-clean or dry-clean sofa covers.
